Description | Two major goals were set for this project. Firstly, we had to create a corporate identity for the Double Grill & Bar; and secondly, the brand of whiskey manufacturer Ballantine’s had to be integrated into the bar’s interior. Inspiration for bar’s identity came from diplopia, a medical condition otherwise known as double vision. Frankly, it’s all in the name of the bar. One can acquire double vision by going too hard on the alcohol, which happens a lot in an institution of this kind. Furthermore, the same effect can be achieved by looking at objects through a faceted glass, an icon of the Soviet alcohol industry. Double Grill & Bar brings together people with a certain taste in music, and positions itself as an American bar of 1920-30s; at the same time Ballantine’s proclaims that one has to ‘WORK&ROCK’. Agency set to combine rock culture with the spirit of America at the start of XX century. Consequently, Double Grill & Bar sports modern designs made out of artificially aged materials. A made to order steampunk guitar with wooden body and authentic old brass components, a Union Jack curtain made out of denim patches, and other unique items/ The bar gives off an industrial feeling of the early XX century America, while Ballantine’s brand leaves more of a Britpop impression. We thought Thom Yorke to be a perfect Britpop icon for us to use to create industrial pop art pieces for the bar. We ‘painted’ four portraits of him with paint, plaster, rust and welding. And since Ballantine’s is heavily associated with rock, we also created a leather jacket couch! It is riveted, made out of black leather, and looks like a jacket a rocker would wear. Furthermore, we perpetuated an apogee of a rocker’s performance, the moment of a guitar being broken. It can be seen on one of the walls of the Double bar. And the quotes of great musicians we placed on bar stools will give patrons some food for thought. |
